College Spirit Day!! Friday April 3rd!!

This past month, students at Memorial Middle School have been using time in their advisory to learn about different careers, their earning potential, and the type of education needed to enter their chosen career.  To conclude this unit, we are encouraging students to wear their favorite college apparel this Friday, April 3rd. Students can wear hats, shirts, sweatshirts or any other clothing that supports their college or career choice.

Grade 8 Reminders

A few reminders for Grade 8 Parents:

1.  The final payment for class dues should be submitted by this Friday, April 3rd.  A letter was sent home to each family indicating the final amount due.  Checks can be made payable to Memorial Middle School.  The letter can be found here:

Grade 8 Dues - Final Payment

2.  The Year Book Committee is seeking a baby picture of each student.  Pictures can be sent to school in an envelope or by email.  Pictures sent in an envelope should have the students name on the back of the picture and on the envelope.  Digital pictures can be sent to Brandon Sullivan, our yearbook advisor, at bsullivan@town.hull.ma.us.

3. The Grade 8 Celebration Dance Committee is seeking any and all digital pictures of groups or individual students from pre-K through grade 8.  These pictures can be submitted to Kerrie Ryan at kryan@town.hull.ma.us

4.  The Grade 8 Celebration Dance is scheduled for Friday, June 12th from 6:30 to 10:00 pm.    A small group of dedicated parents have met monthly to organize every last detail of the dance as well as fund raise several thousand dollars to fund this wonderful evening for all students.

They need your help!!

The committee is asking for help with setup the day before the dance and cleanup after the event. Only a few more people are needed for setup.  However, about 10 parents/guardians are needed for cleanup. If enough parents/guardians volunteer, cleanup will only take two hours and everyone will be home by midnight!!

To volunteer for setup or cleanup, please email Madeline Rys at:

Go Green and Give Green this Spring!!!

MMS Student Council and Project 351 Present:

Go Green and Give Green this Spring.
Spring greening offers a dual way to make an impact on your community.  You can re-use, re-purpose, and re-cycle items you no longer need in order to assist local children living in homeless and low income situations, while reducing the number of items that go into landfills each year.
We are collecting new and gently used:
Clothing- kids’ sizes 0-20 & adult S, M, L
Shoes – infant sizes 0-13 & youth adult sizes 1-10

Penny Wars Return to MMS!!

The National Junior Honor Society will be hosting "Penny Wars" between all 1st period classes starting Monday, March 16th and ending Friday, March 20th.

The winning classroom will be able to pick from a selected group of charities where the money will be donated.

Rules:

The classroom with the most points at the end of the fundraiser wins

Pennies count as one positive point each, but silver coins and paper money (including checks) count AGAINST the classroom.

This is where the competition begins. Students can “bomb” their competitors’ jar by placing silver coins and paper money into it. For example, if a homeroom looks like they have a lot of pennies, a student can “bomb” (sabotage) that jar by putting a quarter into the jar and that classroom’s points will decrease by 25, a dollar will reduce their points by 100, etc.

At the end of each day, count the pennies separately from the silver coins and bills. Subtract the total amount in silver and bills from the total amount of pennies. The difference is the actual points earned by that classroom.

Publicly announce the points each homeroom earned so students can plan what classrooms they may want to “bomb” the next day. Remind students that pennies are positive points and they need to continue bringing them in to add to their own jars. After a couple of days most of the homerooms will have negative numbers.

Teachers are encouraged to participate. Many have been known to empty their piggy banks to help their classrooms out. Others have told their students that they’ll match portions of their contributions. Students begin looking down and picking up pennies they find on the ground; it’s amazing how many pennies are dropped and not picked up.
