Stay Informed - School Lunch Account Balance.

My School Bucks

Keep your student’s meals account balance current by setting up on-line alerts when their account reaches $10.00 or below.  You do not need to pay on-line to receive the alerts
It’s very easy – go to www.myschoolbucks.com to create your account.  Follow the prompts and be sure to add each student individually.  Choose to receive notifications by text message and/or email.

If you do choose to pay on-line, there are a couple of options – set up auto pay for a specific amount or pay on-line when you receive the alert.  The student will always have money available on their account.  Note if you pre-pay 11 meals on-line, you will get the 12th one free.

If you would rather not pay on-line, that’s fine too.  When you receive the notification, send in cash or a check (payable to Hull Public Schools) with your student and they can pay the cashier in the cafeteria. It’s that easy!

Student’s who reach a negative balance of $10.00 or more will receive a notice from the school and an alternate lunch will be given until the balance is paid in full.

If you think that your family may be eligible for free or reduced priced meals, please fill out the meals application and send it into school with your student.  A copy of the application can be printed from the Hull Public Schools website or you can pick up a copy in any school office.  You will receive a letter from the school regarding the decision within a week of submission.  If you don’t receive this letter, do not assume you are approved; contact your student’s school.

Pi Day Rally

Memorial Middle School hosted its first annual Pi Day Rally sponsored by the grade 6 team on Monday, March 14 (3.14!!).  This was our third Rally this year.  Pi is an irrational number that represents the relationship between the radius of a circle and its circumference. During the rally, the grade levels competed against each other in a variety of competitions that all revolved around Pi.  The rally culminated with a Pi(e) eating contest.  Grade 6 beat out 7th and 8th grade to win the rally competitions!  A grade 6 student, Troy Healey was crowned King of Pi Day as he correctly recited Pi to 175 digits.

Term 3 Progress Report Letter to Families.

March 4, 2016

Dear Parent/Guardian:

We have reached the midpoint of term 3 and progress reports are now posted to Aspen!!  Progress reports are an estimation of your child’s performance at the midpoint of a term, they are not a “grade.”  A progress report is the teacher’s opportunity to let the student and their parent/guardian know whether or not the student is on track to achieve the grade that will be reported at the end of the term.  If your child’s progress notice is not where you expect, this is the opportunity to work together with your child and our teachers to help students meet expectations.   Contact information for teachers can be found here:

Our students continue to perform at a high level.  This past October, our Grade 8 class took the College Board’s PSAT 8/9 assessment.  We recently received our students’ scores on this test and they were mailed home several weeks ago.  The national average on this test was an 801.  The Massachusetts state average was an 820.   Memorial Middle School’s average was an 836.  Our students exceeded the national average by 35 points and the state average by 16 points.  After the scores were reported, I visited each grade 8 class.  I shared their scores with them and congratulated them on a job well done!!

The next major assessment will occur this spring with Math and ELA PARCC exams in all grades and Science MCAS exams in grade 8.  The test dates are as follows:

May 2 - Grade 7 ELA
May 3 - Grade 7 ELA
May 4 - Grade 7 ELA
May 16 - Grades 6 and 8 ELA
May 17 - Grades 6 and 8 ELA
May 18 - Grades 6 and 8 ELA

May 9 - Grade 7 Math
May 10 - Grade 7 Math
May 11 - Grade 7 Math
May 12 - Grade 8 Science MCAS
May 13 - Grade 8 Science MCAS
May 23 - Grades 6 and 8 Math
May 24 - Grades 6 and 8 Math
May 25 - Grades 6 and 8 Math

Before we get to these tests, we have two full months of school to prepare students. We also have several events coming so students have some fun before the school year starts to wind down.  First, we have Penny Wars next week.  Penny Wars is organized by our NJHS and raises money for a charity.  Students bring in loose change to their first period class and donate it.  Pennies and silver coins count as points.  Paper money counts as negative points.  The first period class with the most points wins.  They will also pick the charity and play a game of dodge ball against the second place class.

On March 18th we will have our second Annual March Madness event.  Admission is $7 or $5 with a nonperishable item.  The event starts at 5:45 pm and ends at 9:30 pm.  We will have professional entertainment, Karaoke, organized gym activities, ping pong, video games, and a movie.  Pizza, snacks, and beverages will be available for purchase.  We do need parent volunteers to help out.  If you can volunteer, please contact Assistant Principal Greg Kelley at 781-925-2040, ext. 1103, or by email at gkelley@town.hull.ma.us    Students must be in school the day of the event to attend.  Students must arrive by 6:00 pm and may not leave until 9:30 pm.  All school rules are in effect during this event.

Spirit Week will take place the week of April 11th and will end on Friday, April 18th with a rally in the gym.  After the rally, students will participate in Memorial Middle School’s Mini-Marathon to celebrate the Boston Marathon.

Finally, the annual cookie dough sale is in full swing.  Information was sent home with students on Monday.  Proceeds from the sale support Music education at the middle school.  I will personally vouch for the chocolate cake mix, it is simply the best chocolate cake I have ever had.  I purchased one for my kids to make on my birthday each year!

Please stay connected to Memorial Middle School through the blog, Facebook, or Twitter.  As
always, it is a pleasure working with and learning with your children.

Sincerely,

Anthony A. Hrivnak
Principal

Box Tops Reminder!!

Please remember to send in your Box Tops!  Please write the name and grade of your student on a slip of paper and include it with the Box Tops.  We hold a weekly drawing to recognize students for their contribution.  Thank you for your help as we raise money to support technology education.

Penny Wars!!!

The National Junior Honor Society will be hosting a Penny Wars between all 1st period classes starting Monday, March 7th and ending Friday, March 11th.

The winning classroom will be able to pick from a selected group of charities where the money will be donated.

Rules:

The classroom with the most points at the end of the fundraiser wins

- Pennies count as one positive point each, but silver coins and paper money (including checks) count AGAINST the classroom.

This is where the competition begins. Students can “bomb” their competitors’ jar by placing silver coins and paper money into it. For example, if a homeroom looks like they have a lot of pennies, a student can “bomb” (sabotage) that jar by putting a quarter into the jar and that classroom’s points will decrease by 25, a dollar will reduce their points by 100, etc.

At the end of each day, count the pennies separately from the silver coins and bills. Subtract the total amount in silver and bills from the total amount of pennies. The difference is the actual points earned by that classroom.

Publicly announce the points each homeroom earned so students can plan what classrooms they may want to “bomb” the next day. Remind students that pennies are positive points and they need to continue bringing them in to add to their own jars. After a couple of days most of the homerooms will have negative numbers.

Teachers are encouraged to participate. Many have been known to empty their piggy banks to help their classrooms out. Others have told their students that they’ll match portions of their contributions. Students begin looking down and picking up pennies they find on the ground; it’s amazing how many pennies are dropped and not picked up.

Music Festival Participant!!

Memorial Middle School Grade 7 Student Robert Hunter will be attending the SEMMEA Junior District Festival.  He will be performing with select students from all over the south shore.  This is the first student from the middle school to qualify and attend in many years.

Congratulations Robert!!

Scale Model Project in Ms. Kelliher's Grade 7 Accelerated Math Class!

As part of a unit on ratios and proportional relationships, students in Miss Kelliher’s 7th grade accelerated math class recently completed a scale model project. Students were asked to pick an object, building, place, etc. that they wanted to either build or draw a scale model of. They were able to put their knowledge of proportions to practical use when determining the what the dimensions of their models should be. The finished designs turned out great!

Kacee and Bianca display their project proudly!

Aedan poses with his scale model of the Washington Monument!

Maeve shows off her trumpet!

Siobhan, Carly, Isabella and Kayla stand in front of their model of Fenway Park, with lights!

Nolan, Harry and Anthony display their completed model of a football field!

Melissa, Jenna and Hailey hold up their scale model of a small pencil!
