Report Card Parent Letter!!

January 28, 2016

Dear Parents and Guardians,

Report cards for the 2nd quarter have been posted to Aspen!!  Questions about grades should be directed to teachers as your child’s teacher will have the most information about your student’s performance.  Questions about Aspen can be directed to Mr. Kelly, Ms. Casey, or me.  Please do not hesitate to contact any member of the faculty or administration to answer questions or to resolve your questions or concerns.  All email addresses and phone numbers can be found on our website:

Memorial Middle School is participating in the PTO sponsored Read-a-Thon!!  We hope all students will participate by reading as much as possible between Friday, January 29th and Sunday, February 7th.  The main goal of the read-a-thon is to encourage all students to read.  Students can read anything they want, even required school reading counts towards the total amount of time read.  As long as students read they can complete the reading log and submit it to their first period teacher on Monday, February 8th.  Reading logs and any money raised should be turned in no later than Wednesday, February 8th.  This event is also a fund raiser for the PTO!  Please help your child find sponsors.  Some sponsors pledge $1 or $2 per book read while other sponsors pledge a penny or two per minute read.  Some sponsors will pledge a fixed amount of $20 or more.  All money raised is used to support field trips and school activities.  Prizes include Amazon gift cards, itunes gift cards, Wachusett Mountain lift Tickets, Principal and Assistant Principal for the day, a chance to win an Amazon Echo and other fabulous prizes!! For more information and the official forms, please go to our blog:

Here are a few important notes:
  • The PTO is wrapping up its second Scholastic Book Fair.  If your child forgot to bring their money and would like to purchase a book, the book fair will be open tomorrow from 10:30 to 1:30 pm.  Also, the new Diary of a Wimpy Kid is in!  The book was scheduled to be here, but was a late arrival.  The book is in!!
  • The Neon Dance is tomorrow night, Friday, January 29th from 6:00 to 8:00 pm!!  All students are encouraged to attend.  The cost of the dance is $7 or $5 with a canned good.  All money raised is used to support student activities and field trips.
  • Memorial Middle School collects Box Tops!!  Please collect those Box Tops and submit them to the front office.  We hold weekly drawings for prizes for any student that submits Box Tops.
  • Grade 8 Families:  the middle school yearbook team needs those adorable baby pictures for the grade 8 yearbook!!  Please submit one baby picture per student, be sure to write the name of the student on the back of the picture.  Pictures can be dropped off at the main office or students can deliver them directly to Mr. Sullivan.  The yearbook will make every effort to return the pictures; however, irreplaceable pictures should not be submitted.  Pictures must be received by Friday, February 12th.
  • Have you signed up for the Stop and Shop A+ program?  This is an easy way to raise money for student activities and fieldtrips and it costs you nothing!!   We have already raised over $1000!!  Simply go to this website and register your Stop and Shop card today.

The second semester will bring new challenges to your students.  Continue to support your students by providing a quiet place to do homework and to study each evening.  Use Aspen and Schoology to review school work, homework, and grades.  Encourage your child to read whenever possible and allow your child to see you reading.  Should you have questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to contact your child’s teacher or administrator for assistance.

Sincerely,

Anthony A. Hrivnak

Principal

Grade 6 Iditarod Project

Our Grade 6 students had an incredible opportunity today to Facetime with a person who was a participant in the Alaskan Iditarod.  Grade 6 has been studying the Iditarod as part of the ELA curriculum.   They have read articles, researched the event, and watched a Discovery Channel special on the Iditarod.   Ms. Dillon and Ms. Wilcoxen arranged for the students to spend about 40 minutes asking questions about the training, preparation, and the entire experience.  About a dozen student asked questions they prepared in advance.  The students did a remarkable job asking questions and the entire class was incredibly well-behaved.  The presenter was very engaging and told fantastic stories from his experience.
The entire 6th grade gathered in the Large Group Room to listen
to the real life adventures from the Iditarod.
Dan listens to a response from our "musher."
Nina asks a question via Facetime.
Did you know that more people have climbed Mt. Everest than have completed the Iditarod!!

Half-Way Day - Grade 6!!

Monday, January 25th was half-way day in Grade 6!  Grade 6 students are now closer to their high school graduation than they are to their first day of Kindergarten.  (As the parent of two middle-school age students, this hurts a little bit!)  Students and teachers celebrated on the grade 6 floor with half-way themed activities throughout the day.  Students dressed up in "half way day" outfits, college clothing, or kindergarten outfits.  In the pictures below, students composed original poems, songs, raps, and essays about half-way day and presented them to the grade level.

Neon Dance - Friday, January 29th 6:00 to 8:00 pm
