Welcome from the Memorial School Nurse!!!

Welcome from the Memorial School Nurse!

My contact information is:
Sharon Striglio, R.N.
81 Central Avenue.  Tel. 781-925-2040, Ext. 1106  Fax 781-925-8002  sstriglio@town.hull.ma.us

Medications and Medical Conditions
Please notify the nurse of any acute or chronic medical conditions/injuries or medications regarding your child.  Medications or treatments can be given at school with parental permission and a doctor’s order.  If your child takes a medication daily in the morning, you may want to supply the nurse with a couple of doses just in case your child forgets to take it at home.
Flu vaccines
Flu vaccinations will again be offered to all Memorial Middle School students and their families.  Permission slips will be sent home with your child, and will be posted on the blog.  If you want your child to receive the influenza vaccine, please sign the permission slip and have your child return the form to the Nurse’s Office.

Physicals
If your child had a physical exam and/or immunizations by their primary care provider, please send a copy in to the nurse’s office.  This keeps their school health record and immunizations up to date.  All 7th graders are mandated to have a physical exam and provide documentation of the physical and immunizations to the nurse’s office.  Any 8th graders who have not sent in a physical/immunizations documentation, please do so ASAP.

Vision and Hearing Screenings
Vision and hearing screenings are done in the fall on all 7th grade students.  Any abnormal findings will be communicated to the parent or guardian and further screening will be recommended.  If you have any concerns about your child’s vision or hearing, please call the nurse’s office and I will screen your child ASAP.

Postural Screening
Postural Screening is done in the spring on all students in grades 5-9.  Any abnormal findings will be communicated to the parent or guardian and further screening will be recommended.

Nutrition
Please remember to encourage your child to have a healthy breakfast.  Many students are coming to school without breakfast.  Breakfast is the most important meal of the day.  It is very difficult for a child to be alert and learn in the classroom if they have not had anything to eat in the morning.
Please notify the nurse and the food service director of any dietary restrictions or allergies.

Hygiene
Middle school is a time of tremendous growth and change.  Please encourage your child to be conscious of their hygiene.  They should be taking showers daily and using deodorant.

Sleep Habits
Middle School children typically need about 10 hours of sleep per night.  All electronic devices should be turned off during the night.  A good night’s sleep will help your child to do well in school.

Exercise
It is recommended that all children participate in 60 minutes of exercise per day.  This can be riding a bike, walking on the beach, playing a team sport, or playing frisbee in the backyard!

Please feel free to contact me if you have any questions or concerns about your child’s health!

Grade 6 (and New Student) Orientation and iPad Presentations

The following letter was emailed to grade 6 parents and mailed home this week:

August 8, 2016

Dear Grade 6 Students and Parents/Guardians:

Welcome to the 2016 – 2017 school year and to your first year of middle school!  The “official” back to school letter will be mailed next week.

Some students (and parents!) may be a bit uneasy about the transition to middle school.  To help foster a smooth transition, Assistant Principal Greg Kelley and I host an orientation program for students and parents at the times and dates listed below.   Parents/Guardians may call Ms. Casey in the main office at 781-925-2040 ext. 1101 to make an appointment.  Orientations will last between 75 and 90 minutes.

Thursday, August 18th
Monday, August 22nd
Wednesday, August 24th
Tuesday, August 30th
9:30 am
9:30 am
3:30 pm
6:30 pm
1:30 pm
3:30 pm
6:30 pm

At the orientation we will discuss the differences between elementary school and middle school, your schedule, classes, advisory, and other middle school topics.  Students will receive their locker assignment and will have time to practice their locker combinations.  Students and parents/guardians will receive information about the online lunch account system called "My School Bucks."  Parents can use this voluntary system to manage their students' lunch balance.  We will also have all students and parents/guardians log into their Aspen accounts.  (Aspen is the school database where students and parents can find information about grades, homework, attendance, and conduct.)  Students and parents will, of course, be able to ask questions.  A portion of orientation will be dedicated to our one-to-one iPad program. Those attending may also take a self-guided tour of the building.  Maps and other information will be provided and stations will be set up to assist with the tour.   Students will not receive their iPads during orientation.  iPads will be issued to students during the first week of school.  (Orientation is not a drop off event!! Students and a parent or guardian must attend the orientation together.)

Parents/Guardians and their students must attend an orientation to receive an iPad.  If you cannot attend one of the sessions, please contact Ms. Casey and Mr. Kelley will contact you to schedule an appointment at another time.

Students are encouraged to start the school year with their best effort by completing the summer assignments.  These assignments were made available at the end of school last June and they are currently available on the table outside the main office at MMS. Additionally, assignments are posted on the middle school’s social media:

School supply lists can also be found on these websites.

Mr. Kelley and I look forward to meeting students and parents/guardians during orientation.  Should you have any questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to contact me! Remember to look for the official “Welcome” letter to be mailed out in the middle of August.  This letter will contain additional back to school information.  I look forward to working and learning with you during the next three years.

Sincerely,

Anthony A. Hrivnak
Principal
